OK, I'chiliad not into pop civilization anyway. Besides, I can think of 100s of things that are more interesting than "Credit Card Babrie," "The Semiotics of Home Decor," "Reality TV meets Plastic Surgery," "So You Wanna Be A Gansgsta," "The Science of Shopping," or even "Funky White Boys and Honorary Soul Sisters." Just reading these titles make me sick.

Why is it that the popular and unimportant or even unnecessary (Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Kim Kardashian, et. al.) get way besides much attention.

Just considering something's popular doesn't mean in that location'due south redeeming value or that it should be given obsessive attention. Hell, at in one case the oppression of women and slavery were popular. Were these neat ideas that needed to exist delved into or merely erased and forgotten.

Your pick. I've made mine.

2.5 stars - some of the "pop culture references" were dated or not popular enough that I fifty-fifty knew what they were. (That girl from Heroes still acts in stuff, what??)

3.5 It's a very skillful reader on civilisation and media studies. I really liked the introduction to each affiliate; they were insightful and sometimes more than helpful and interesting than the actual reading selections. My only qualm is that for a text on civilisation studies, particularly pop culture, that more space was not defended to discussions on critical race theory or gender studies that become beyond only the surface level. Like Profiles of popular culture : a reader, this is a drove of essays culled from unlike sources with introductory material and discussion questions at the end of each piece, but unlike the former book, the essays stand well on their own and you can pretty much ignore the supplementary cloth and still take a good read.

Side notation: I'm getting a little burnt out on the Pop Culture affair; I think I'm going to go back on an Data Management kick for a while.

I am assigned to read selections from this volume for my College Writing II class. I accidentally bought the wrong book and when I went to become the correct on at the bookstore, they were all out. I have an assignment due on our next class meeting :( I am going to research semiotics and as much as I tin can about pages 75-85. My instructor is suppose to send me the writing prompt on page 81.

This is fantastic to give to high school students. A lot of introductory essays on Semiotics that are readable and accessible. Many of my students disagreed with the interpretations in some of the essays, which were conducive to various types of dialogues that both myself and the students could engage in. I dig it when kids tin can read material that forces them to question their surroundings.

This volume has a ton of essay type papers that are all about the civilisation we live in. i'm not enjoying information technology to much considering I call up some of the arguments expressed are a little far fetched. It is a great book. It shows how the life of capitalism started in the United States and then, how we are perceived to advertisers nowadays. Nosotros are being studied carefully in guild to desire more than and buy more!!

I'm done!! I've read all the essays I had to read for my grade (so that may non actually hateful the entire book) but wow! Information technology was proficient for a book in college. ^_^ I really enjoyed a lot of the essays and would definitely recommend this to people particularly if they accept a curious mind. :) I'm done!!
